Adult Training
The Scout Association is committed to supporting our leadership and providing learning opporturnities for all adults.
All adults accepting a Warrant are, within a period of up to three years, obliged to show that they have the defined skills for the role. Leaders completing training will receive the Wood Badge.
The Adult Training Scheme is modular in structure comprising a total of 36 modules. Adults are only required to complete those modules appropriate to their role. Adult Training should be accessible to all and so training for many of the modules can be completed in a number of different ways. The scheme recognises prior learning, experience and existing knowledge. So it is not always necessary for adults to attend training. They will however be required to demonstrate their skills through validation.
All adults will be linked with a Training Adviser who will agree a Personal Learning Plan at the outset, monitor progress, advise and validate competence. There is also the opportunity for adults to work towards an externally recognised award through the training they do in Scouting.
Opportunities for Adults
Adults working in Scouting contribute in excess of 364 million hours of voluntary work each year to their local communities.
The number of volunteers is bigger than the combined workforces of the BBC (24,000) and McDonalds (67,000) put together, with award winning training and one-to-one support, Scouting ensures that volunteers make the best use of their skills and talents. It’s something different from the norm – and that’s why a lot of people like it
Opportunities for Leaders
With your energy, enthusiasm and ability to inspire young people you will be responsible for making Scouting happen. Working with a small leadership team you will plan and Opportunities for Adults deliver an exciting balance programme for one of our five age ranges with outdoor opportunities, environmental projects and a strong international element.
Opportunities for volunteer managers
With your excellent organizational skills and ability to motivate teams of adults, you are the sort of person we need to oversee the work of adult volunteers. There will be recruitment and retention challenges in your area, opportunities for improvement and review, but don’t make the mistake that this is a desk job. You’ll be out visiting Scouting as is happens – in meeting places, at camps, activity centres and plenty of other places besides.
Opportunities for trustees
Parents place a huge amount of trust in us; because we have a duty to protect the children in our care we make sure that Scouting is safe as well as enjoyable. We also have a duty to ensure that large financial resources and property are administered properly. It is therefore essential that we have responsible individuals who can help us maintain our high standards. Does this sound like you?
Opportunities for parents and supporters – take the first step into the future
Scouting simply would not exist without the skills and enthusiasm of thousands of adult helpers. Whether you can spare two hours week, a day or a month, we need instructors, treasurers, administrators and volunteer managers and many others who share our aim of making life better for young people.
You don’t need to know anything about Scouting to make a difference.
