Activities - Canoeing and Kayaking
Canoeing and Kayaking have long been popular with Scouts, Explorer Scouts and Leader as the activities are both exciting and challenging, whilst at the same time being relatively low-cost and simple to arrange.
Bucks Scout Canoe Club runs paddling evenings all year around, either at Longridge, on the river Thames during the summer, or in a pool in Beaconsfield during the winter months. We also run a number of River trips further a field to suit different paddling abilities from beginner trips through to white water trips.

BCU Awards
This year the summer sessions at Longridge run by the water team will continue and will cover the British Canoe Union Paddlepower Passport and Discovery awards for beginners. We also run 2 star awards course for adults as well as the various three star award courses in Touring, White-water and Freestyle for our more accomplished paddlers. These sessions are open to Leaders and Scouts/Explorer Scouts.
As continuing part of this course there may also be the opportunity for participants to take part in a two-day river trip.
River Trips
We also run a number of river trips throughout the year suitable for various groups varying from a short paddle down the Thames for beginners, through to a weekends white water paddling in Dartmoor.
Details of these trips will be made available via your course coach or direct from the Canoe Club team.

Pool Sessions
Following on from the summer sessions on the river we also run pool sessions through the winter months to enable those who have completed summer courses with us to continue to paddle and progress through the colder winter months. You will be allocated to a pool group based on your ability and will typically get access to one two hour pool session a month. Pool sessions are ideal for working on your Eskimo roll and more advanced techniques so that in your second summer you can really hit the water running!
UKCC Coach Training and development
As well as general paddling courses we also strongly encourage our paddlers to take up coaching awards and try and run at least one BCU/UKCC coaching course each year. The coaching awards are nationally recognised by Sport England and are open to all people over 16 years old. As such they are an ideal development challenge for Explorer Scouts as well as being an essential tool for getting more adult coaches to help at the Club!

White water and Freestyle opportunities |
White water and beyond
As our paddlers develop further (usually in their 3rd year or so with the Club) we offer more advanced awards including the BCU 3* Whitewater and new Freestyle awards so Scouts can look to progress their paddling onto more advanced water, both on the Thames weirs and on white water river trips to Dartmoor and Wales.
The Canoe Club therefore offers opportunities for beginners and advanced paddlers alike and for Scouts, Explorers and Adult Leaders. If you want to know more or be added to the information mailing list for all things Scout paddling related in Bucks contact Garry Miller (details below)
